The final project of my Drawing in Motion class at SCAD! This was a really fun and labor intensive project, so luckily we were divided up into teams of two.
The project is for a documentary my professor is working on called “The Green Book”. The film is about how traveling started to become a more popular thing to do in the 30,s 40’s and 50’s, but there was still a lot of racism going on, so a postman created a book called “The Green Book” which was a list of places such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc. where African Americans were “accepted” and they could go without fear of being prejudiced against. It will feature interviews and stories with people fro that time talking about their experiences and how the book helped them see the country at a very difficult time.
Our part of the project involved illustrating how exciting traveling was at the time for all races. We were given a set of postcards from a location as well as a time period, age range and race. The otehr requirement was that it needed to be partially rotoscoped in that several of our key frames had to be rotoscoped, and we were to in-between the rest. Our post cards were from Niagara falls and we were to animate a white couple in their 30’s from the 1930’s. one of the postcards showed Niagara falls in the winter, and we were really drawn to that concept since usually you see people going to Niagara falls in any season other than Winter.
We came up with the idea that the young couple would be visiting Niagara falls. The man would be standing in frame when his wife would come running on excitedly. She’d point off camera, and a gust of wind would blow her hat which would transition into the couple with the winter Niagara falls scene behind them and the man would give his wife his hat. I’ve included a couple still frames below, and you can see the final piece in the animation section of my portfolio!
